What is Misoprostol?
Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin drug. The high-purity API is a pale yellow, viscous liquid. It works by mimicking the biological activity of natural prostaglandins in the human body and has important applications in obstetrics, gynecology, and gastroenterology. The finished product is typically manufactured as tablets.

Function of Misoprostol.
It has a potent inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion. In gastroenterology, it is primarily used to prevent and treat peptic ulcers, particularly gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and to prevent gastrointestinal damage caused by specific medications. It is generally taken orally.
It is primarily used for induction of labor, early pregnancy termination, and the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage caused by poor uterine contractions. For abortion, it can be used alone, but its effectiveness is not as high as when used in combination with mifepristone or methotrexate. It is typically administered orally or vaginally.
For the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, it is generally administered rectally.

Mifepristone: An antiprogestin that blocks the effects of progesterone, causing endometrial shedding.
Misoprostol: A prostaglandin analog that promotes uterine contractions to expel pregnancy tissue. Using both together can more safely terminate early pregnancy. It’s suitable for pregnancies within 49 days.
Common abdominal pain and diarrhea are generally mild and last for several hours before gradually subsiding. Some patients may also experience nausea and vomiting. Adjusting the medication schedule to take after meals is recommended to alleviate symptoms.
If used for obstetrics and gynecology, vaginal bleeding and cramping abdominal pain may occur. This is related to the medication’s effect on uterine contractions, and the amount of bleeding should be closely monitored.
A small number of patients may experience allergic reactions such as rash and itching, requiring discontinuation of the medication and medical attention.
A very small number of patients experience difficulty breathing and facial swelling. These conditions are very dangerous and carry the risk of anaphylactic shock, requiring urgent medical attention.
The duration of misoprostol’s effects varies from person to person. Common gastrointestinal reactions such as diarrhea and abdominal pain may occur within a few hours of taking the medication, while the effects of ulcer treatment typically require continued use for several weeks. Most women experience vaginal bleeding within three to six hours of a medical abortion, and some may expel the gestational sac during this time. Most women experience expulsion within three days of taking the medication, but no more than a week.
