Methyldopa and Pregnancy
Methyldopa is one of the core oral antihypertensive drugs for the treatment of preeclampsia. It is especially suitable for the mid-to-late stages of pregnancy.
Do you know what preeclampsia is? Preeclampsia is a serious complication that occurs during pregnancy or shortly after childbirth. It doesn’t just refer to high blood pressure, but rather a syndrome in which high blood pressure is accompanied by signs of damage to other systems in the body (most commonly the kidneys). If not treated promptly, it could pose a life-threatening risk to both the mother and the fetus.
The following points should be noted when using Methyldopa:
- Timing of medication administration. Administer medication when blood pressure remains elevated, depending on the patient’s specific condition.
- Monitor the patient’s condition during use. Be alert for a range of complications associated with methyldopa.
- Postpartum care. Methyldopa carries a risk of causing postpartum depression, and it is recommended to discontinue its use within 2 days postpartum.

What is Methyldopa ?
- Methyldopa is also known as α-methyldopa.
- Methyldopa is used to treat high blood pressure. It is one of the first-line drugs, especially for gestational hypertension.
- Methyldopa belongs to the class of antihypertensive drugs (for treatment).
- Methyldopa is usually administered orally or intravenously. The effects of the medication typically take effect within 5 hours of ingestion and last for one day.
- Methyldopa is the active ingredient in oral methyldopa preparations. The injectable formulation of methyldopa is actually made from methyldopa hydrochloride (methyldopa ethyl ester hydrochloride).Methyldopa cannot be directly formulated into an injectable form because of its poor solubility in water.
- Common side effects of methyldopa include drowsiness.Serious side effects may also occur, such as hemolytic reactions, liver problems, and allergic reactions.
- The mechanism of action of methyldopa is mainly to reduce the activity of the sympathetic nervous system by stimulating the brain.
- Dosage of methyldopa: Less than 1 gram per day, divided into several doses. This reduces the probability of side effects and makes the symptoms milder.
- Methyldopa can be taken in combination with labetalol.Especially when one of these treatments is used alone during pregnancy, and the treatment of hypertension is ineffective. However, this must be done under the guidance and monitoring of a doctor.
