Lubiprostone Mechanism of Action
Lubiprostone is a localized chloride channel activator that selectively activates type 2 chloride channels (CIC-2) located on the luminal cell membrane of the gastrointestinal epithelium. This increases intestinal fluid content, softens stool, promotes intestinal motility, and alleviates the symptoms of chronic idiopathic constipation without altering plasma sodium and potassium concentrations.
