How does treprostinil work?
Treprostinil (Orenitram) is a potent DP1, IP, and EP2 agonist that acts by directly dilating pulmonary and systemic arterial vessels and inhibiting platelet aggregation. The sodium salt of treprostinil can compensate for the deficiency of natural prostacyclin (a vasodilator). Patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) experience very high pressure in the arteries between the lungs and heart, causing shortness of breath during activity and ultimately leading to heart failure. Treprostinil directly dilates pulmonary and systemic arteries, inhibits platelet aggregation, and exhibits antiplatelet effects. It can significantly improve dyspnea index, symptoms and signs of PAH, and hemodynamic parameters in PAH patients.
It is used to treat PAH and PAH associated with interstitial lung disease.
